Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that theoretical knowledge only becomes meaningful when students can connect it to real financial decisions. I aim to help students not just complete calculations, but understand what those numbers mean and how to act on them.
My approach to teaching centres on bringing real data and professional experience into the classroom. In units such as MAF202 (Banking and Financial Institutions), I guide students through sourcing and analysing live market data, comparing institutions, evaluating balance sheet structures, and interpreting results in context. Before entering academia, I worked as an Auditor with close engagement across banks and investment banks. I draw on cases from that period to illustrate how credit and liquidity risk are assessed in practice, how regulatory frameworks operate under commercial pressure, and how the financial concepts covered in lectures are applied and debated in real professional settings. Together, data fluency and industry perspective help students develop analytical skills they can carry beyond the classroom.
I also develop interactive tools to bring specific topics to life. When teaching superannuation, I use the SMSF Simulator, a desktop application I built for this purpose. Students take on the role of a fund trustee, configuring contributions, selecting asset allocations, and observing how their choices play out over a simulated investment horizon. The tool builds intuition around personal wealth management and portfolio construction, helping students understand how asset mix, tax treatment, and drawdown strategy interact over time. The aim is for students to finish with a practical feel for financial planning decisions, not just the mechanics.
